There is a marked discrepancy between what managers see as the causes of absence from work, and the reasons given by employees. Many organizations are now suffering from being too streamlined. By reducing staff levels to such an extent, even minimal levels of absenteeism put remaining employees under intolerable pressure. In due course this may spread stress$-$related absence or other problems across the organization.
