This activity will assess you on the material from learning outcome 2 "locate and select data using
secondary research methods".
Specifically, the assessment will focus on the objectives:
2.2 Identify various sources of secondary data.
2.4 Identify if the secondary data collected is suitable for answering the research question.
2.5 Use electronic resources from the library to collect secondary data.
2.6 Create a literature review that properly documents secondary sources.
You may not work with another student and/or collaborate on your answers or use any material
created by another person without acknowledging the source (plagiarism). As a professor, I am aware
of the existence of Spinbots, AI (artificial intelligence) and students who purchase assignments from
outside sources. Use of these tools is a violation of Cambrian's Academic Integrity policy.
Instructions
In this applied activity you will fill in a research matrix to help you critically evaluate and organize
information from five sources related to your research topic. You must follow these steps. Please watch
THIS VIDEO for an overview of the activity instructions.
1. Identify your research topic. You should use the same research objective and research question
that you developed for Applied Activity 1. If you received feedback from your professor, please
make changes to your research topic based on that feedback. Please contact your professor to
discuss if you would like to pick a new research topic if you change your topic without
approval your submission will not be accepted. Download the Applied Activity 3- TEMPLATE
file from the assessment on Moodle. Copy and paste both your research question and objective
from Applied Activity 1 into the area provided on the template.
2. Locate and select five (5) academic sources that are related to your research topic. These
sources can include peer-reviewed journal articles, books, conference papers, or reports. Ensure
they are recent (published within the last 5 years) and from reputable sources (use the
Cambrian College Library database and/or Google Scholar). Use the CRAAP test to evaluate the
quality of your sources.
3. Complete each cell of the research matrix with the information below
Reference in APA Format: Provide the full APA citation for each source. If you do not
include APA references your submission will NOT be accepted. Remember you can
obtain full APA references from the Cambrian College Library website and/or Google
Scholar (just make sure to review for accuracy!).
Keywords: List the keywords or key phrases used in the source. These are terms that are
essential for understanding the source's content. Sometimes the keywords are clearly
listed, but you may have to come up with your own list (3-5 terms)
Research Problem: Identify the research problem which SHOULD include the research
objective and/or research questions. You may copy this word-for-word from the source.
If the source does not explicitly state them, provide a summary of the research focus.
Participants/Sample Description: To the best of your ability, describe the sample or
participants involved in the study, including relevant characteristics such as size,
demographics, or selection criteria.
Methods & Design: Explain the research methodology used in the source (e.g.,
qualitative, quantitative, mixed methods). Include details about data collection and
analysis methods.
Summary of Findings: Summarize the main findings or outcomes of the research. What
did the authors discover, and how do these findings contribute to the field?
Synthesis: Explain how each source is related/connected to your chosen research topic.
Does it provide valuable insights, support your thesis, or offer a contrasting perspective?
4. Fill in the information above for each of the five sources in the matrix. Be concise and clear in
your responses, focusing on the most important aspects of each source.
Submission and Grading
Please consult the rubric on the next page for details on how you will be graded. This rubric is also
available in Moodle directly in the Applied Activity 3 assignment link.
There is a research matrix example that we complete LIVE during class available in Moodle directly in
the Applied Activity 3 assignment link (the file called Applied Activity 3 LIVE EXAMPLE). Please review
this example to see what a research matrix that meets the requirements of Applied Activity 3 looks like!
Make sure you have included APA citations for all works used to stay in accordance with Cambrians
Academic Integrity Policy. It is also recommended that you use Grammarly to check your work for
plagiarism and spelling/grammar errors BEFORE you submit your literature review.
Once completed and reviewed, please upload your research matrix as a single Word document (.docx)
to the Moodle Applied Activity 3 assignment link.
This activity must be submitted before Wednesday, October 11
