First, here is the prompt for the essay you will be writing:

ESSAY PROMPT

To practice the skills of They Say/I Say, this essay will focus on reporting on and responding to differing groups and their viewpoints on the umbrella issue of how technology is changing us. These viewpoints come from the scientific community and doctors, the media, tech industry leaders, educators, and the public. The reading in your book provides several perspectives on this issue, and you can focus your paper on using the various perspectives found in the articles in They Say/I Say, or you can modify the topic slightly.

ARTICLES in THEY SAY/I SAY (You can use any of these as sources) From Chapter 22

Possible Topics (but not limited to):

• time management on devices
• organizing for social justice
• socializing online (negatives or positives)
• cognition and technology--how technology shapes our brain function
• addiction to technology--psychological effects of connectedness
• attention and multi-tasking--we think we can do several tasks at once with technology
• search engine algorithms (how they shape what we think or are exposed to)
• hostile language and online threats
• online education in the pandemic
• the online echo chamber--reading only sites we agree with
• working from home
• the limitations of bandwidth

Follow the guidelines for our essay on length (1300 words min. 1400 words max.) and specifications according to MLA format. You will use about 3-6 sources.Include the URLs for the references. Visuals may be included.

Next, you need to decide which topic you want to write on. You can choose from the list above, or decide on another topic similar to those.

Then, fill out the questions below to help you think through all the different positions on your topic and where they might come from. For example, if you want to write about time management on devices, educators would have a different opinion that those who design software or hardware. So, you may have to do a little research to find out the different perspectives on your topic to answer the questions below.

After you have the perspectives from different groups of people, you will need to decide whether you agree, disagree, or partially agree or disagree with their perspectives.

Then, finally, decide what you want your readers to know or be able to do as a result of looking at all the different perspectives.
