This assignment asks you to prepare a short speech that introduces you to someone in a meaningful and memorable way by highlighting your skills and accomplishments with specific examples. The elevator pitch is a common genre, and the only way to build a successful one is by preparing it, polishing it, and revising it. You should proceed in the following steps
First, choose your opportunity. You may wish to look at job postings in your preferred field or use a position/situation from your current workplace or internship. No matter what you choose, it should be a specific posting/opportunity and one that you could conceivably apply for. For this to be useful now, we do not want to do pitches for being the next CFO of Google.
Second, draft your pitch. 90 seconds translates to somewhere between 90 and 270 words, depending on your rate of speech. Thats somewhere between 10 and 30 sentences. Your pitch should make sure to include relevant information
Your name and current position/company (if applicable)
Your relevant skills and how they translate to the opportunity. For example, if the position requires the employee to meet with clients, and you have excellent interpersonal skills, discuss how your skills will help you excel in those client meetings instead of just saying you have good interpersonal skills.
A recent, relevant accomplishment or contribution and how it helps make you a strong candidate for the position. If possible, this accomplishment or contribution should be memorable and interesting.
Third, revise and practice your speech. We will do some sharing and revising in class with small groups, but you should also practice outside of that. Recording yourself and watching/listening to the pitch can be a really helpful way of identifying strengths and weaknesses. Track the time and make sure youre routinely coming in around 90 seconds.
Finally, you will deliver your speech in class on X. We will keep time and cut you off if you go past 95 seconds. You will role-play this interaction, and another class member will stand in as your audience.
