This assignment has two parts to it. Please complete both parts and then submit your assignment in D2L.

Overview: The models presented in this module are only a few possible representations of how communication takes place. And, because it was introduced to explain certain foundation concepts, it was simplified to focus on two people in conversation. This exercise allows you to consider and evaluate the many variables that may affect interaction. You will also understand the key components of the communication process.

Part 1 Construct your own diagrammatic model of the essential elements and processes involved in any three of the following communication situations.

Your models primary function should be to describe what elements are involved and what processes operate in the specific situations chosen. You may find it useful to define the situation in more specific terms before you begin constructing your model.

If you do not want to draw a model with the communication elements (sender, receiver, noise, etc.) then you can simply list them and describe how they operate within the communication situations. If you draw a model, its okay to take a picture of it and insert it into this document.

Communication Situations (select three to diagram/model) Sitting silently on the bus while trying to avoid talking with the person seated next to you. Asking for a date on the phone to someone youve communicated with only on the Internet. Meeting a new student in class. Participating in a small workgroup to decide how to reduce operating costs. Talking with someone who speaks a different language (which you dont know and who does not know your language) and comes from a culture very different from your own. Arguing with a best friend. Calling someone to try to get them to sign up with your telephone service. Talking while eating dinner with your family.

Part 2 After constructing your model, respond to the following questions:

How adequately do your models explain the process of communication?

Do you think models help someone new to studying communication get a clear picture of what communication is and how it operates? How So?
