This assignment is the LBA for the course. You will work in groups of 3
students to gather foot traffic data, then build and analyze a model of that
data.
Foot Traffic Modeling
Important notes: (1) We offer you the opportunity to do the research entirely
online. Look for floorplans, use reasonable estimates for foot traffic, and carry
out the analysis as accurately as you can, given all the constraints. (2)
Each group is tasked with using a distinct dataset, so obtaining prior approval
from your professor is essential. Please submit your dataset for approval by April
17th.(3) We are open to groups modeling movement patterns other than foot
traffic. If you are interested in analyzing a different system, reach out to your
professor for approval at least one week before the assignments deadline.
Project Scope
For this LBA you will work as a group of three students to analyze the flow of foot
traffic through a public space in your location. For example, you could go to or
research about a local museum and analyze the movement of visitors through
a small wing of exhibits. Or you could go to the food court at a local mall
and analyze the movement of customers between counters. After
collecting data at the location, you will construct a model to predict how
foot traffic could evolve over future time-steps.
You should choose a single location to visit or research about (e.g., a
historical site) and collaborate as a group to collect data.
Note that we will continue developing our knowledge of the tools you will
use to build and analyze your foot traffic model over the second half of the
course. In particular, you will be applying content from Sessions 36,37 and
39 Matrices and Graphs, Trees and Markovs Matrices and Graphs
and Networks and Session 30 Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors.
Site Requirements
Select a site that can be logically divided into at least 5 nodes. For example,
the nodes could be exhibits in a museum wing connected by hallways or
counters at a food court with a neighboring section.Site Map
Create a graph that represents the structure of your site. The graph should have
a vertex for each node and an edge between vertices representing nodes
connected by a path. For example, a site map of the first floor of the Asian
Art Museum in San Francisco (SF) could be mapped as follows.Create a graph that represents the structure of your site. The graph should have
