This assignment will focus on factoring polynomials. Factoring is an important skill needed when solving polynomial and rational functions.
If a thrown object's height can be described bywherehis the height in feet andtis the time in seconds. Solving this equation whenh= 0 represents when the object is on the ground, that is the time in seconds after being thrown that the object will land.
Factoring this equation gives:
Knowing that numbers multiply to 0 only when one of the numbers is 0, gives two possibilities. Either. Solving these two equations gives the solutions. From this, we conclude that the object lands after 8 seconds (the negative time does not make sense in this applied situation).

Part 1
In class, you will be divided up into small groups and given a list of problems from Unit 1A. The group will work together to solve problems from the Unit 1A Module.Be sure to answer at least two of the problems on your own paper, clearly showing steps or explanations as well as the solutions.
As you work, follow these guidelines:
- Discuss the problems within your group, using professional language and courtesy.
- Offer ideas and advice for those who are struggling with a question. Do not simply tell someone an answer without letting them think it through on their own first.
- Make sure you write down your own steps and solutions to at least two problems as you solve them. You will submit this work in Canvas in Part 3.
Part 2
Once your group has had a chance to workshop the problems, select a group member who will teach the class how to work one of the problems (also select a backup problem in case another group chooses the same problem). Rejoin the main group andhave your representative teach one problem to the class.
Each small group should teach a different problem so there are no repeats. The class can discuss other problems from the list as time allows.
Part 3
Once the class presentations are over, each person should submit their own solutions to at least two problems, including steps and explanations. This work should be each individual's work as this part of the assignment isnota group submission. One simple way you can finish by submitting a photo of your work. Please make sure the problems are legible and the photo is well-focused.
