This exercise asks you to execute the mass balance for the bio-oil from microalgae process focusing on water use. Water use is the focus of this sustainability analysis because of the ever-increasing focus on water supplies in the United States with changing precipitation patterns.
That being said the specific metric being used to judge the sustainability of the process is the amount of water consumed from the environment for every pound (or kg) of bio-oil (i.e., fuel) produced. In other words, how much water is consumed supporting the production of fuel. The presumption, here, is that a process to produce biofuel from the sun is not necessarily sustainable if it consumes lots of freshwater (a resource in the environment that is arguably more important that fuel).
Using the formulas and calculations derived in the lecture on Systems Analysis, calculated the mass flow balance over each unit operation. For this analysis use as the base case the following parameter: Biomass Productivity =60gdw2m2 day ; Surface Area, =50,000,000m2, Polar lipid content =10%(w/w), Neutral lipid content =25%(w/w), Pond Depth =0.2m, Pond Width =3.0m, and Dilution Rate =0.3 day 1. Fill out the requested quantities in the table below and show your work. You can write in the work and then upload a copy of it as a photograph or you can type in your work and reupload the file. Just as long as you follow the template and your work is legible.
