This exercise give you an opportunity to practice/test yourself on your understanding of the Five Forces concepts and analytical technique and how to use that approach to identify Key Success Factors for an industry.
Step 1- download a blank Five Forces Worksheet (see Learning Materials).
Step 2- Think about the U.S. Fast Food industry. You ought to be able to do a pretty good job of this by just thoughtfully applying what you already know and can observe about this industry. But if you want, you can certainly do some research (but do NOT be a reporter/journalist and look for answers....look for information for you to do YOUR analysis).
TASK 1: On a Word document with your name on it, define these variables necessary for this analysis:
Who are the PRODUCERS in this industry? Who are the BUYERS? Who are the SUPPLIERS? What are available SUBSTITUTES?
TASK 2: Complete the Five Forces indicator worksheet and come to your overall conclusion about each force (just note this on the worksheet...you do not need to write this up.)
TASK 3: Using the approach described in the lesson, use your Five Forces analysis conclusions to describe what you believe are the three most important Key Success Factors for producers in this industry. You are to write a brief argument to support your conclusions on these KSFs.
So--- Your submission will be one Word document with (a) your definitions of the four variable in task 1; (b) your inserted Five Forces worksheet (*completed); and (c) your conclusions and arguments supporting the three most important Key Success Factors for producers in this industry
