This exercise is not for grading purposes. We will discuss as a class at the end of our IR spectroscopy class.
Situation
I was working in my lab one night. I had a bottle of CH3(CH2)3CO2H( pentanoic acid )which is a colourless liquid with an unpleasant odor.
I reacted the pentanoic acid with methanol in the presence of an acid catalyst to produce an organic product. From my organic chemistry class days, I predicted that methyl pentanoate was formed and put some of the presumed methyl pentanoate in a third bottle.
Then all the labels fell off my three bottles so I labeled them x,Y, and Z.
I had an IR in the lab so I took spectra of X, Y, and Z.
Using the attached spectra, help me put the proper labels back on X, Y, and Z.
Explain your answers with reference to relevant features of the three spectra in the region above 1500 cm-1
Helpful hint for those who have not taken organic chemistry class in a while:
Methyl pentanoate is CH3(CH2)3CO2CH3
You may want to print the 3 spectra if you have difficulty visualizing the 3 spectra together
