EM4050 COMPANY Ltd CASE STUDY Company Ltd is a business-to-business sales company which manufactures small motors and accessories for industrial and home products. The industry is highly competitive, and the company follows a prospector strategy. A prospector strategy takes advantage of new markets and products (Gomez-Mejia, Galkin and Cardy, 2001). Organisational emphasis is on growth, innovation and new product development. A prospector wants to be first to market. Torespond to competitive and rapidly changing markets, prospectors have flexible, flat and more decentralised organisational structures. Company Ltd is headquartered in a small town of 28,000 people, with a low unemployment rate of 3.1 percent. This means that demand for workers exceeds the labour-supply. There is a technical school and a community college within 50 miles of Company Ltd. Recently, several other local companies have experienced labour organising activities and the 'Unite' trade union have been recruiting members actively in the organisation. The company reward package is simple. Employees are paid at rates in line with the immediate locality, have 20 days annual leave, standard contributory pension scheme and some staff are given company cars if the job requires it. EM4050 Company Lid employs 500 people and the business is growing. The HR department has two staff who are reactive to requests from managers and mainly performed transactional and administrative HR tasks. There have been a few cases of the company being taken to an Employment Tribunal in the last 12 months and the Managing Director considers it vital that any HR initiatives and changes should comply with UK Employment law. There are specific issues that need resolving, among them the following: (a) Gertrude, who is a lesbian, is not promoted because Chris, the manager believes the team that she will work with are homophobic. Chris thought that Gertrude's sexual orientation would prevent her from being able to fit in with the team and work effectively with them. She is infuriated when she got to know about the rationale for not getting promoted and is planning on taking the matter to the Tribunal. (b) There is a case in which there are allegations of misuse of company property. In this case, John has a company vehicle he uses due to the nature of his job. He is sometimes required to work from home where he keeps the van and goes to pick up deliveries for company clients. There have never been any customer complaints to do with how he delivers the service. However, the administration office has noticed that the fuel and mileage log of the van while it has been allocated to 'Sat' shows double the mileage and fuel consumption when compared with the other vehicles used by Company Ltd for staff doing a similar job. There have been rumours, but no concrete information, that some staff have been using company vehicles on non-company business. However, a letter has been received from a member of the public noting that the writer had heard that Company Ltd would hire out vans, with a driver, to move small Items of furniture locally. The female writer has seen the vehicle doing a delivery to her next-door neighbour. She understood that the rates were very competitive and wanted to know how she could book a van to take some old furniture to the local waste and recycling centre. John only lived around the corner from the letter's author. Your line manager is furious that there is a breach of the psychological contract and wants the culprit fired, and tasks you to do so. (c) In another matter that is brewing', Kate, who is one of the most reliable supervisors in the organisation wanted to further her career with the organisation. However, after she tells her manager that her mother, who lives at home, has developed a long-term debilitating iness and will need looking after, she was not considered for promotion and is planning to approach the Tribunal to report the organisation This assessment is subject to the University Assessment Regulations for Candidates 2 of 3 A recent employee engagement survey conducted by external consultants indicated that employee morale and motivation is low. It is also felt that dis-engaged employees are part of the reason that production efficiency has dropped, and quality results are below what they should be. Additionally, recently, the organisation's employee turnover rate has been higher than normal and sick absence rates are above average. Traditionally the company has been able to recruit locally however this is becoming increasingly difficult. The closest big city is 30 miles away and public transport links are poor but there is a good road network. The local city has a more ethnically diverse population than the small town where Company Ltd are based. The organization provides some skills training courses but most training is delivered by sending people on external training courses as and when needed. The Managing Director is concerned about the quality of training, the lack of leadership training development and succession planning The marketing and sales department continues to sell products to an expanding market. Because of this increased product demand, output must be increased by 50 percent and therefore the number of employees will need to increase. The company does have sufficient space to expand on its current site. Task: What issues does the case study raise? As the HR Advisor, how would you handle the problems presented in this case study?
