If data presented in a table shows 5 (five) "X" scores and 5 (five) "Y" scores, is the total number of scores (sample size) 10 (ten)? Or, does each corresponding Y score mean a change in the original X score, resulting in a total sample size of only 5 (five)?

Another way to ask the question is this: is each X score and each Y score separate scores, or does Y just represent a "change" in the X score, so you should NOT add up all the X scores and all the Y scores to get a total number of scores in the sample?
