Abstract

The Jamaica Constabulary Force, the premier crime fighting agency in Jamaica makes a strong claim that they use social media, and such use is drawing a great academic attention as well as that of the legal fraternity accompanied by the common citizen who depends on social media for their daily news and updates. The research about the effects and the impact of social media on investigations within this environment is not vast. Most studies on police use of social media focus on the content of police social media websites. Little research, however, has been conducted regarding the effects and the impact of social media on investigations as it relates to its use by the citizens and the police. The purpose of this paper is to fill this knowledge gap.

The paper is set to identify the principal organizational characteristics of different types of social media and how the police associate solving crime or information gathering for investigative purposes with the use of social media.
