This is called a project because its purpose is for you to apply what you have learned to a realistic system you might encounter in the work environment. You will take the perspective of a systems engineer working for a forest firefighting team whose job is to organize and carry out missions to extinguish forest fires in vulnerable national and state forests. The system in place for fighting forest fires is complex with teams of firefighters, including "smoke jumpers" parachuting into difficult to reach terrain and tanker aircraft dropping water and fire retardant on fires. Control fires are set to slow or interrupt the progress of fires, in some cases in advance of fires to prevent their occurrence. As a systems engineer you are tasked not with managing the firefighting system, but with developing a new sub-system which will consist of a fleet of drones for surveillance of fire zones and areas where fires might start and grow out of control. You will be able to use any type of drone, all mounted with cameras and other sensors such as infrared sensors.
