Introduction to the Activity

Organizational learning is an important component of effective change implementation. We must be able to collect information about how we are doing so that we can learn from both our successes and failures. Assessing the quality of organizational learning in a workplace allows us to embed learning tools throughout the organization (if they are missing) that will support double-loop learning. Double-loop learning challenges the status quo and allows dynamic discussions to develop as we critically think about what we currently do and what we need to achieve.

Response Directions

This discussion is drawn from Exercise 28.1 in Chapter 28 of the Hayes text. The first four questions are drawn from the exercise, then a fifth question is added.

Consider the quality of organizational or collective learning in your organization or in a part of the organization with which you are familiar. When making your assessment, reflect on the following questions. Compose your answer to this discussion using five short paragraphs, one for each question, for a total of between 500 and 700 words.

First paragraph: Briefly identify the organization or organizational unit you are discussing. What is the balance between single-loop and double-loop learning, and how does this relate to the kinds of changes (continuous or discontinuous) confronting the organization or unit?

Second paragraph: Do people fully appreciate the systematic nature of the organization? Are they aware of how what they do affects overall organizational effectiveness?

Third paragraph: Are people motivated to share experiences and ideas and seek a more effective way of operating?

Fourth paragraph: Is there an ideological commitment to an established way of doing things that discourages innovation and the exploration of new possibilities?

Fifth paragraph: What role does the leader play in creating a shared purpose related to learning and change? This is for a graduate level class. Any help would be appreciated!!!
