Project Scope Description: The scope of the Vancouver Mart Supermarket project is to plan, design and renovate an existing space of 50,000 sq ft located in Burnaby at the intersection of Lougheed Highway and Lake City Way. The supermarket would offer a large variety of grocery items such as meat products, fresh produce, dairy products, deli, seafood, and general merchandise such as housewares, toiletries and appliances. The supermarket will have an entrance adjoining the parking lot and will have ramps to be wheelchair-friendly. Fire exits will be placed at optimum locations to ensure customers and staff can exit safely and quickly in case of emergencies. Appropriate signage will be placed throughout the supermarket to direct customers and staff. There will be energy-efficient lighting and commercial flooring rated for high traffic use. The checkout area will be kept close to the main exit with five checkout lanes and ten self checkout counters. The exit will have security sensors to deter shoplifters. Two designated areas for washrooms will be provided for staff and customers. For the shopping area, heavy-duty shelves, fridges, freezers and an automated sprinkler system for the fresh produce will be installed. Aisle width of 6 feet to be maintained and where appropriate shelves will be kept at a height where disabled people can reach without assistance. Staff will be provided with a designated parking area, a break/lunch room complete with furniture and appliances, separate changing rooms for men and women and lockers, and safety equipment for using heavy equipment. The warehouse will include three walk-in coolers for dairy, produce and meat and a freezer.
