As New York Times foreign affairs columnist Thomas Friedman noted in the title of his best-selling book, The World Is Flat, the global economy has, to a remarkable degree, evaporated national borders in relationship to the conduct of commercial transactions and to the operations of multinational corporations. Indeed, patent protections provided by the United States, Canada, or the European Union may have little or no value if those property rights are not respected by countries such as China, India, or Indonesia, which may have altogether different views of the intellectual property rights accorded to entrepreneurs.

Although international organizations such as the World Trade Organization have ostensibly been created to harmonize intellectual property enforcement, do you feel that greater protections need to be accorded to entrepreneurs in light of the uneven enforcement of intellectual property rights around the world? Do you believe that organizations such as the World Trade Organization and the United Nations perform a sufficient job in providing entrepreneurs sufficient protections for the products, services, and ideas that they market around the world?

If not, what could you propose as a better system for providing entrepreneurs greater protection in the global economy? You may wish to consider what sanctions, if any, you would impose upon countries that do not respect intellectual property rights accorded by other nations. You might also wish to consider any geopolitical factors that may complicate the universal enforcement of intellectual property rights.
