This short research essay must have an argumentative thesis that is defended and supported by evidence from peer-reviewed material. It must use at least 3 academic peer reviewed sources (journal articles, books) from the course reading list or those posted by the instructor in the files section ONLY. You will not be required to do external research for this assignment. The citation style must conform to the McGill Guide to Uniform Legal Citation and use either endnotes or footnotes and have a references page. The library provides a style guide here: https: guides.library.ontariotechu.ca/citation. The paper will be evaluated based on how well it meets the above requirements in addition to being clearly written with proper organization and structure and free of grammatical and typographical errors. It will use 12 pt font and be . As this is an academic paper, to be written in academic style, you should not be including personal reflections or opinions.

The essay will answer one of the following questions:

1. Discuss the phrase: "The law has been in force but has no meaning or rather is in force but without significance" in the context of the use of emergency powers in a liberal democracy like Canada. You can focus your argument and essay around one event where emergency powers were in use such as WW1, WW2, the FLQ crisis or the Freedom Convoy.

2.Discuss the phrase "Necessity knows no law," in the context of morality and the law. Does law have a place in regulating morality and "ethical" behavior? If so, what are the limits if any? If not, why not? Frame your essay around one or two ways in which law regulates or regulated society.

3.Evaluate the supremacy of Parliament in light of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms. Is Parliament truly as supreme as it once was in terms of its law-making ability or has that role fallen to the Courts? Consider all aspects of the Charter and the role of common law but also the Not-Withstanding Clause. 4.To what degree does law shape popular culture and its portrayal of law. Does popular culture change the law or does law influence popular culture? Or neither? Explain using examples.

5.What is law? Is it a means of social control along class, gender or racial and ethnic lines? Or is it about defining relationships in society such as in economic ones? Or something else? If it is a means of social control is it a necessity? Use specific examples to support your argument.
