When people think of the Walt Disney Company they think of the magic and memories they help to create. Working for the company is no different. Within this analysis, I will focus mainly on the parks experience and products division with a focus on the parks/resorts... Main Leadership Styles Or Theories (fix/maybe add in header)

When examining the leadership styles of the departments that I have worked in within the Walt Disney Company, I find that the majority of the time it is an autocratic style. The Organizational Behavior text defines it as, "A leadership style where the leader makes the decisions alone without asking for opinions or suggestions of the employees in the work unit" (Colquitt et al., 2023, p. 472, para. 1). I think that this style generally comes across as a negative. (add in fact)

One thing I feel that should to be pointed out is when employee's move out of a basic level, their opinions start to matter more. I have found that when working with managers in a coordinator role (supervisor), most managers have a consultative leadership style. The organizational behavior text defines this as "A leadership style where the leader presents the problem to employees, then ask for their opinions and suggestions before ultimately making the decision themselves" (Colquitt et al., 2023, p. 472, para. 2). I personally think that this style is better and a more positive style and in my opinion, the best style. (add in fact)

I also think that the company has aBureaucratic leadership style. This style has a number of things that work well in the Walt Disney Company. "Bureaucratic leadership is a leadership style that follows a hierarchy where formal duties are fixed. Leaders using this approach act according to official rules set by superiors within the company" (Indeed Editorial Team, 2024). Just about everything that Disney employees do, has a set of rules that go along with it. For most jobs, there is a set way of completing each task. Organizational Culture

When analyzing the organizational culture at the Walt Disney Company, within the Disney Parks Experiences and Products they have five core principles known as the Five Keys. These Five Keys, is what their culture is wrapped around. The five core principles are Safety,Courtesy, Inclusion, Show, and Efficiency. Each principle has its own important factors involved. It was only a few years ago that they added the last key and this key has helped complete the circle that makes up the Walt Disney culture for their employees.

Each key is placed in the order of importance. Safety is the first key and as Disney says, "SafeD begins with me!" When looking at this key through an Organizational Behavior lens this company has the expectations that each of their employees must act in a safe manner in all that they do. Safety is taken very seriously and that is seen on day one. All employees are given a personnel number as well as a company ID the first day of work. Every employee is provided with on-the-job training as well as continuous safety training. Each department also has a safety committee that meets one a month to discuss what safety violations have occurred in the last month, what could have been done to change it, and what the focus of the next month will be. One article from Safety Culture said that having employees involved in work place safety culture will help with "morale, teamwork, and a strong will to follow safetyprocedures andrules" (Caburao, 2024). With each committee that the company has, it helps the employees to understand why safety is built into their culture.

The next key is courtesy, which is demonstrated by how the Disney employees act. The courtesy key helps all employees understand that the Walt Disney Company holds respect as a top level priority within the workplace culture. All employees are taught, day one, that they treat all guests and each other with respect and courtesy. Having courtesy as a part of a company's culture is important because it can help with communication, less problems, and it also provides good interactions with all (Hotwire PRC, 2023).

The Inclusion key is at the center of everything the Disney employees do. In 2019, The Walt Disney Company introduced a new key, the Inclusion key. The inclusion key cultivates "an environment where all people feel welcomed and appreciated for their unique life experiences, perspectives, andculture" (D'Amaro, 2021 para. 4). Disney has provided a safe place for their employees to be their authentic selves. They now can have visible tattoos, more diverse nail and hairstyles, and gender-inclusive costumes (D'Amaro, 2021). With the introduction of the fifth key the company has changed the culture of being seen as just another person who is a part of a big show to allowing their employees to be who they really are.

"Show" is the next key and it isn't all about entertainment. This key can be more precisely described within the workplace culture as presentation. With the show key it is important to keep in mind that Disney employees need to look presentable and their work space needs to lookpresentable as well. The show key is important because it shows that the employee takes pride in how they and their location look. People want to work in a clean space. If someone comes into a Disney location and sees that it is dirty, they won't want to return. If the guest doesn't want to return, then the employees are out of a job, literally. When Disney employees start, they are told the story behind why Walt Disney wanted to build Disneyland. Walt was at a park with his daughters and he thought the park to be "grimy and unsavory operations, unfriendly to families with children" (How Disneyland Went, n.d. para.). This is why the show key is an important part of the Disney culture. Disney employees maintain show so they can provide a beautiful place not only for guests, but for themselves as well.

Lastly there is the Efficiency key, which is just as important as the other keys. This key is good to have within any workplace culture because one thing people do not like to do is waste their time. At Disney, the employees analyze how they are doing different tasks and then how they can do the task to their best ability. (add in fact) Major Organizational Changes

Major Organizational Changes are something that are inevitable. Most employees just hope that they will be for the better. The Walt Disney company is no different when it comes to these types of changes. As of the 2023 Bob Iger, the Walt Disney Company'sChief Executive Officer hascondensed all the different divisions into just a few. The goal for this restructuring is to "refocus the organization on creativity, empower creative leaders, andensurethey are accountable for all aspects of their businessesglobally" (The Walt Disney Company, 2023, para. 1). The first is the Disney Entertainment division. This division will be over all entertainment including streaming services, which is one of the biggest focuses that the company has at this time (The Walt Disney Company, 2023). The next is ESPN, which includes all sports content that the company is including with their streaming service ESPN+ (The Walt Disney Company, 2023).

The lastis the Disney Parks, Experiences, and Products division. This covers everything else within the company, from the "theme parks, cruise line, resort destinations, Adventures by Disney, National Geographic Expeditions, as well as Disney's global consumer products, games, and publishing businesses." (check for missing information)

When looking at their organizational structure, Disney uses a decentralized cooperative multidivisional structure. There are so many layers within the company. A line manager at the Parks has six degrees of separation between themselves and Josh D'Amaro the Chairman of the Parks and one more from the CEO, Bob Iger. (Put the definition of multidivisional)

Ethical issues

With this organizational changes comes someethical issues. Ethical issues are the last topic to be addressed. There are a few different topics withinthe ethical issues area when it comes to the Walt Disney Company and rest assured, there are always ethical issues that a company will face, seen and unseen. For the Walt Disney Company they have had a few that have been in the news recently, one being the case of a wrongful death lawsuit against the company.

When a guest attempted to name Disney as part of a lawsuit in conjunction with the death of his wife, who died from anaphylaxis as a result of a food allergy at one of the restaurants located on Disney property. The family dined at Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant, located at Disney Springs at the Walt Disney World resort. It should be noted that Raglan Road Irish Pub and Restaurant is a third-party vendor and not run or owned by Disney (Nicole, n.d.). In the process of this lawsuit Disney argued that the man had agreed to not sue the Disney company as a result of an agreement signed when he initiated a trial membership of Disney+. He also used the Disney website to purchase tickets, further prohibiting him from bringing suit (Hidden Forced Arbitration Clauses, 2024). Both of these actions are something 100% different from eating at a restaurant on Disney property. Disney received a lot of criticism about how they tried to use a clause that wasn't the originally intended for that particular purpose. In the end, Disney ended up retracking that dismissal reasoning, stating that they wanted to show humanity in this case (Hidden Forced Arbitration Clauses, 2024). With their retraction of this arrangement, it can be seen that their action was ethically wrong. Having chosen to fight this case the route they originally chose to do so was just immoral.(add in more facts maybe, shorten)
