This topic does take us back to the basic purpose of business. Rimanoczy (2015) reminded readers of Milton Friedman's assertion that business must primarily be concerned with maximizing profit. Although Friedman won a Nobel Prize for this theories in 1976, with hindsight we see the greed and problems that arise with a sole focus on profits.

By the 1990's John Elkington had proposed the concept of a triple bottom line (Rimanoczy, 2015). This idea proposes that in addition to profits, social value, and effects on the environment should be measured. With today's easy access to information it is no longer difficult to research an organization's motives. This means that we can determine if they have a focus on profit only, or if they are concerned about sustainability of resources through an emphasis on "people, planet, and profit" (Rimanoczy, 2015, para. 9).

Class- any further thoughts on whether organizations should be pursuing the triple bottom line given that it does incur additional costs?
