This week I am going to be talking about digital surveillance and the impacts that it has, and continues to have on the rights of people around the world. Digital surveillance, is a term that encompasses so much in our day to day lives. It can be as light as a camera on a street light in the middle of New York City, and it can be as invasive as applications on your phone having access to your microphone and camera. With technology being such a large part in our day to day lives, it opens up a massive vector for our personal rights to be violated from a number of actors, to include malicious groups, corporations, law enforcement and even our own federal government. The information can be used to make money, and to potentially be utilized against us for legal or personal reasons. This violates the very rights that our country was founded on, specifically our 4th amendment rights and our rights to privacy. In his piece, Mass Digital Surveillance and National Security Technotopias, Duncan (2025) talks about how this style of surveillance is often justified to the public under the guise of National Security. Though this is often correct, the thing that is not brought up, is how the governments access to these data sources creates inherent gaps and openings for other bad actors to access this data. So not only can the government be collecting data illegally, but it could also inadvertently being leaving breadcrumbs behind for non state actors to do the same, for other untold reason
