This week I learned more about 5 distinct organizational structures and their characteristics. Below is a summary of each along with examples.

• Small start-up companies and restaurants are good examples of companies that should employ the simple structure of organizational configuration. In simple organization structures, there are few reporting layers or hierarchy and most of the workers report into one person. (reference text book section 3.5)
• A large automotive manufacturing company is a good example of machine bureaucracy form of structure. This type of company has operating tasks that are repetitive, produce high volumes, and have a very stable and simple environment.
• The kinds of organizations that should feature a professional bureaucratic structure are those that depend on highly skilled professionals who require self-imposed formalization and standardization and typically have a related governing entity and professional organization. A good example of such an organization would be the police department.
• The kinds of firms that should use the divisional form of structure include those that serve multi-markets and/or produce multiple products in their operations. Divisions can be created for each market with central headquarters at the top of the organization structure. One example of a divisional form of structure is General Motors or Walt Disney Company.
• Organizations that are best suited to the adhocracy form of structure are those having a specific project or solution that must be delivered by skilled professionals working I a dynamic fashion with limited formality or standardization. A good example of adhocracy structure is a construction project team.
