This week we are working on your IRAC writing format. How do you write an essay? You write your essay answer in the IRAC format. IRAC is in the form, of Issue, Rule, Analysis and Conclusion, In a nut shell: I-Issue The "Issue Statement" is the legal question presented based on the facts. The issue can be presented in either a head note or presented in a question. R-Rule The "Rule" refers to the rule of law that is applicable to the issue being addressed. The Rule comes from the legal theory set forth in cases and statutes. The Rule consists of three distinct but related parts. Those parts are the Elements, the Element Definition, and the Case Summaries. 1. The rule of law that will be used to decide the legal question presented. The rule of law comes from statutes or common law legal theory found in case opinions. 2. The element from the rule of law that is specifically at issue. All rules of law are made up of several elements. 3. The Elements are individual requirements necessary to satisfy the rule of law. The rule of law should be broken down into separate elements. These elements form an outline of the requirements that must be prove in order to satisfy the rule of law. Generally your rule of law is one to two sentences in length. facts relevant to the issue being addressed; and (3) the court's reasoning for its holding. A-Application The "Application" is applying the facts to the elements of your rule of law. The goal is to persuade the reader that the writer's position on the issue is correct. C-Conclusion The main point of the answer; this main point should be provided in one clear, concise sentence.
