This week we will delve into cause and effect writing, which is eminently useful in the academic and work world. Much like next week's compare and contrast skills, the ability to lay out a clear cause and effect analysis is terribly beneficial in demonstrating your critical thinking and communication proficiency, which are the top skills in demand by employers.

so what does it mean to write and think in terms of cause and effect? Simply put, cause and effect is trying to uncover the reason something happens and the results from it. I also need to say cause and effect analysis is closely linked to the process writing we did before, but it goes to the next step of analysis. Think of it this way process analysis wants to discover HOW something happens, but cause and effect analysis wants to discover WHY something happens. And as you can probably see, when these two types of writing are unleashed together a savvy writer can say quite a bit in quick order if they know what they are doing.

Note- Please remember, the way I am approaching writing for us is at the paragraph level. Meaning, while you can use any of the analysis methods we have worked with to write a whole essay, a wiser approach is to know how to use each type of writing analysis inside an essay. So, don't think of a whole essay of cause and effect, but rather an essay that uses process analysis early in the essay then moves to cause and effect later in the essay as a more holistic approach to writing and thinking.

Since cause and effect is largely how Rosling puts his chapters together, it seems important that we engage in a similar process. Please write a 2-page argument essay that deals with what you believe is the most significant cause and effect problem Rosling lays out in this week's reading. Again, we are not ready to argue against him, so just deal with his ideas.

To ensure we are adopting good practices in our writing, for this week please label yourthesis and paragraphs(Links to an external site.)likethis example.
