This week you will analyze a social setting using ethnomethodology. Normally I'd say if you are attending a social event like a dinner, party, meeting friends for drinks or spending a few hours in a coffee house or club where you can observe people coming and going, analyze that setting. But, if you're quarantining, isolating or just not socializing much, go ahead an analyze a zoom meeting. Write social interactionist analysis of your observations. Choose relevant concepts to discuss. Here are some ideas: have stereotypes influenced the people in your setting? applying the principles of dramaturgy can you identify front stage and back stage behaviors? are personal space and distance issues present? can you identify any roles, role strain, role or impression management? Try to describe the setting through these analyses as a sociologist would. Right now a particularly interesting topic to analyze would be people's observations of the conventions for wearing masks and maintaining social distance, particularly as new waves of cases of covid and new strains emerge.
