This will be a persuasive speech. You will need to attempt to persuade us to think a certain way, change our attitudes, or take action. You will use the Problem-Cause-Solution pattern within the organizational model format for your speech and the one notecard format. Be sure to look at the Speech Resource Module content for your persuasive speech!

Assignment Criteria:

1. Speech Outline (25 points):

You will submit a outline before you give your speech. The same outline format that was required for your informative speech will be required for this speech, with a few additions. Please see the persuasive outlining document and student sample speech in the Speech Resourcesmodule. Your outline should include a organizational model language, outlining format (intro, transitions, body, conclusion; I,II,III, A &B, 1&2, ect), in-text citations throughout, and a complete reference list at the end in correct A P A format (look at the Owl Purdue APA for help). Be sure toboldyour oral citations in your outline. Oral citations should include the publication and date of the source.

2. Supporting Materials:

You will use a minimum of 5 credible sources in this speech. Wikipedia is NOT a credible source! You may use books, scholarly journals, valid Internet sources, etc. Make sure that you evaluate your sources for credibility. You have access to many credible sources through the library in your student portal. YOU MUST CITE YOUR SOURCES ORALLY! This means your audience needs to hear you address your sources accurately during your speech. Also, saying "studies show" or "according to research" is not a valid way to cite sources. Be specific. Tell us the publication and date of your source.For example, "According to a New York Times article published on January 3rd, 2019..." then paraphrase the information from that source! Don't include direct quotes, as it will tempt you to read and we're aiming for an extemporaneous delivery. Please bold your oral citations in your outline.

3. Structure:

Note: Structure will be evaluated based on how closely you follow The Organizational Model, the Problem-Cause-Solution lines of logic, and the original outlining handout. Please ensure that you include these elements: Introduction I. Attention getter (story, powerful example) II. Establish relevance to audience (why should we listen to you? How does your topic affect us?) AND credibility (either say, "I've done research on this topic" or cite research) III. Thesis (Today, I will persuade you ______ should ______.) IV. Preview (First, problems. Second, causes. Third, solutions). Body (Internal previews within each main point) I. Problems (Full sentences; include evidence to support your claims and orally cite sources) A. 1. 2. B. 1. 2. Transition: Internal preview/internal summary 1-->2 II. Solutions (Full sentences; include evidence to support your claims and orally cite sources) A. 1. 2. B. 1. 2. Conclusion I. Summary: Today, I persuaded you ______ should _________. First, I discussed the problems. Second, I explained the causes. Third, I provided some solutions. II. Conclusion: Refer back to the introduction story and attention-getter. III. Call us to action. Persuade us to go out and change our actions, attitudes, beliefs, or values. This needs to be a specific and powerful call to action. Tell us to buy a particular book, watch a video, go to a website, etc.
