For this activity, you will be divided into two separate groups based on the first letter of your last name. If your name begins with A-M, you are in the group that will be arguing in favor of the death penalty and that this type of punishment does not violate the Sixth or Eighth Amendments of the Constitution. If the first letter of your last name begins with N-Z, you are in the group that will be arguing against the death penalty and that this type of penalty violates a person's Constitutional right to protection from cruel and unusual punishment, a fair and impartial jury trial, and/or due process.

ASSIGNMENT: Begin by organizing your discussion around a selection of the main areas of disagreement on this issue: (1) Morality, (2) Deterrence, (3) Financial Concerns, and (4) Constitutionality. Next, use the resources provided to make an argument either for or against (depending on the group you are assigned) for each area. Make sure that you are using the information from your prework section when you are arguing the Constitutionality section. Each of the four sections should have at least two points supporting your position.

To reiterate: You will have four sections of concern. You will make at least two points for each section either supporting or disagreeing with the death penalty, depending on your group assignment.
