The City of Tshwane Metropolitan Municipality (also known as Tshwane) is in the northern part of Gauteng Province. It is one of three metropolitan municipalities in Gauteng province. The City of Tshwane is the largest metropolitan municipality in size. The city also borders three other provinces, namely, Limpopo, Mpumalanga, and Northwest.
Tshwane is the fourth biggest municipality of the 8 metres in South Africa and easily accessible via National and Regional infrastructure including the N1, N14, N2, and R21. Wonderboom Airport, OR Tambo and Lanseria International Airports.
The City of Tshwane's population has risen from 2478557 in 2007 to 3555741 in 2017. i.e., at 2,92% annually, which is double the growth rate of the population of South Africa as a whole and of the province. Hercules, Danville, Atteridgeville, Laudium, Saulsville, Lotus) at 22% and 18%, respectively. Region 4 includes Lyttleton, Eldoraign, Rooihuiskraal, The Reeds, Olievenhoutbosch and Waterkloof.
The city is also aligning its climate change response with international peers, having signed the Compact of Mayors' Declaration in 2014(now known as the Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energy) and becoming a member of the C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group (C40), an international group of mega cities committed to addressing climate change. The C40 organisation supports cities and their mayors to collaborate effectively, share knowledge and drive meaningful, measurable, and sustainable action on climate change. As a signatory of the Compact of Mayors" Declaration and a member of C40, the city is afforded an opportunity to be recognized as a leader in local climate change.
