Those are the steps, I do not have the RC
Steps to take when reviewing STAAR data 1. Find the Item Analysis Summary Report for a specific grade level. (I have uploaded examples into Canvas for reference) 2. Review the key at the bottom of the document to understand the different symbols 3. Understand the column names. a. Item: Item/Question number b. RC: Reporting Category c. A/F, B/F, C/H, D/J: Choices. Could be A-D or E-J d. Note that when there is a this indicates there was a non- multiple choice answer. If student answered A, that is the correct answer and B is the incorrect answer. 4. Go through each question and highlight the correct answer choice. 5. Go through each question and circle the highest percent answered 6. Once step 3 and 4 are complete, look through to determine if there were any questions that don't have a circle around the highlighted number. Make note of these question numbers. This indicates that students in Texas answered incorrectly more frequently than answered correctly. (I have uploaded highlighted and circled examples into Canvas for reference) 7. Of the questions that were noted from step 6, look in the column RC to find out which reporting category they belong and make note. (I have uploaded the RC documents into Canvas for reference) 8. Go through and look at the questions correctly answered to determine if there were any that had close percentage amounts of problems that were answered incorrectly. 9. Look at these RC and make note. 10. Once completed steps 1-9, review the RC document and determine which concepts were difficult for students. 11. Look at the question from the released STAAR test and try to work out the problem to get an idea of where misconceptions could have occurred. 12. Consider how you could teach the TEKS included in each RC.
STAAR Analysis Assignment
Decide what grade level STAAR exam you want to examine (must be mathematics). Which is 5th grade. Review the "Steps I take when reviewing STAAR data" that is above. Find the exam that corresponds to your grade and item analysis report (https://tea.texas.gov/student-assessment/testing/staar/staar-released-test-questions). Answer the questions below based on the item analysis and test.
Can be answer directly
Grade Level:_____________
Question number(s) you need to examine based on step 6:________
What reporting categories do these belong? ______________
Question number(s) you need to examine based on step 8:________
What reporting categories do these belong? ______________
Now look at these questions on the released STAAR exam.
For each problem, you listed above, screen shot each problem and paste onto a word document. Work out the problems yourself before checking for the correct answer. Show your work when solving the problems.
As you are working through the problems, try and reflect on what was challenging for you and easy for you. Then consider your student and what possible misconceptions and/or mistakes could have occurred.
After working through the problems, look back at the reporting categories (RC), did a specific RC or RCs have more problems that were missed?
What activities can you use to better help students understand the concept(s) that were missed? Once you have brainstormed ideas, write up about the methods and/or activities and why you believe that would help your students.
