Question:
Thoughtfully and creatively respond to one or more of the following prompts. Responses should be at least 400 words or more in total.
1. What was your emotional reaction to the film? How much had you previously considered the experience of having a disability in a world that is designed and run by those who don't?
2. The film is critical of philanthropic organizations that use pity as a way of eliciting donations, and then only giving a small percentage of that money to actually help those with disabilities. These charities, such as Jerry Lewis' MDA telethon, also refused to involve people with disabilities in the planning and decision-making processes. What is the cultural effect of this type of philanthropy? What are some drawbacks of the over-reliance on private donations and individual generosity to solve societal crises?
3. Although the United States has made great strides in improving equality for people with a physical disability, there is still a cultural stigma attached to disabilities that affect the mind, such as anxiety, depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and others. Why do you think this stigma still exists? What must change culturally for people with a mental disability to receive the care and support that they need?
