Time Expectations$$

You are the office supervisor for a respected consulting firm in Saskatoon. You supervise a team of four administrative professionals. The office hours are from $8$:$00$ a$.$m$.$ until $4$:$30$ p$.$m$.$ five days a week. All your employees respect the established office hours and the allotted time for lunch. In addition to lunch, everyone is allowed two $30-$minute refreshment breaks. One of the people you supervise, Kylie, is a good friend, and you see each other socially outside the office. You and Kylie are the only smokers on staff. Because your office is a nonsmoking environment, you take an average of four additional breaks per day to go outside, each break taking about $10$ minutes. Do the math! You and Kylie are taking $40$ extra minutes of breaks every day. By the end of every working week, you and Kylie have each spent more than three hours away from work. By the end of the month, you each have spent almost two extra days on breaks. Your three nonsmoking employees come to you with this issue of Kylie$$s time. They say that Kylie is working fewer hours than they are working. They report that the other administrative professionals handle the clients and managers that come to Kylie$$s desk while she is on smoking breaks. They have spoken to Kylie several times about the issue, and Kylie$$s response has always been, $$See my supervisor.$$ The nonsmoking administrative professionals recommend that they too be given equivalent time away from their desks.$$
