Chapter 6.7 Communications in Risk Management:
Effective communications in risk management are essential for an organization to maintain credibility in its operations. Effective communications support social governance as it pertains to sustainability. Lets suppose that you are the senior manager responsible for First-Rate Propane Distribution Co., a company clearly unlike Sunrise Propane in terms of the implementation of its risk management system, and you are called upon to speak about your organization and its hazardous operations. This could happen during either a planned communication to the media i.e. a press release, or a spontaneous and unplanned communication i.e. confronted by the media when exiting the corporate offices.
With this in mind, it is important to recognize the different types of communications. Per the list below, match the various items with the relevant type of communication. (5 marks total, 1/2 mark for each correct response; no marks for an incorrect response or no response):

Chapter 6 Risk Management in Industry
Effective communications in risk management are essential for an organization to maintain credibility in its operations. Effective communications support social governance as it pertains to sustainability. Lets suppose that you are the senior manager responsible for First-Rate Propane Distribution Co., a company clearly unlike Sunrise Propane in terms of the implementation of its risk management system. Unfortunately, First-Rate Propane has experienced a rare loss incident, and you will be called upon to speak about it. This could happen during either a planned communication to the media i.e. a press release, or a spontaneous and unplanned communication i.e. confronted by the media when exiting the corporate offices, or even a number of concerned employees at a "town hall" communications meeting.
With this in mind, it is important to recognize the differences in and impacts of effective and ineffective communications during a crisis, and to be prepared for either a planned or an unplanned communication. Per the list below, identify the various phrases below as being either effective communication or ineffective communication. (3 marks total, 1/2 mark for each correct response; no marks for an incorrect response or no response):
Publicly: "While we are still gathering information and investigating the incident, there are many different organizations involved in this facility. We dont know who is responsible at this time, and we may never know."
Answer 1 Question 27
Ineffective
Publicly: Although we take any potential risk to public safety very seriously, this incident is not such a big deal. We have operations like this all over the country and this is only one small incident that happened in over 30 years.
Answer 2 Question 27
Ineffective
Internally: We are doing this communication to deflect bad press from us, and assign responsibility for this incident to one or more of the many different organizations involved in this facility. The lack of regulations in this industry is the root cause of this incident.
Answer 3 Question 27
Ineffective
Publicly: "I will explain what happened in clear and plain terms, while also acknowledging the impacts on our stakeholders and outlining the steps we are taking to address the situation."
Answer 4 Question 27
Effective
Internally: We are doing this communication to protect our social license to operate and minimize impact on investor confidence, while also demonstrating our commitment to improving our risk management processes and addressing any underlying issues that contributed to this incident.
Answer 5 Question 27
Effective
Publicly: This is our incident, and we take full responsibility. We are launching an independent investigation, and we will share our findings on how it happened and what we can do to prevent it from happening
