Analyzing Your Accomplishments

This assignment helps you identify the skills, knowledge, and personal traits that you most enjoy using; you can then look for jobs that use these or similar skills, knowledge, and traits.

Some students initially have trouble coming up with 10 accomplishments because they think exclusively of the sorts of accomplishments that get recorded in yearbooks: being valedictorian or the high scorer on the basketball team. Remind students to include everything that makes them feel good about themselves: being a member of a varsity team, organizing a charity, school or social event, canvassing for charity, running a mile, balancing the books for a youth group, tutoring a peer, learning a language, a musical instrument or another skill, managing their own small business, being responsible for a family member, and so forth.

You will find this assignment helpful in beginning to build a resumé, and in finding the language to quantify what they have done. Job-hunting can be a daunting experience for students who don’t come to the search with stellar credentials. When we remember the things we have done well and have enjoyed doing, we’re more self-confident and project our best selves. And that’s what successful job hunting is about.
