To understand flow, management started with a single security screening line comprising an X$-$ray scanner with an operator, and three screening officers. Arriving customers either queue up or$,$ if there is no queue on arrival, directly put their bags on the scanner. Customers have $0,1,2,$ or $3$ carry$-$on bags, including purses, wallets and so forth. On average, a typical customer has $1\mathrm{.}5$ bags. The X$-$ray scanner can handle $18$ bags per minute. After their bags are scanned, $80\%$ of the customers leave the security checkpoint and head for their gate, while $20\%$ of customers are asked to undergo additional manual screening by one of three screening officers.
