Small Scrawls: Imaginative Short Writings

What is a Small Scrawls? A "scrawl" is something written quickly. In this case, it is a page or so of quick writing that follows you to practice a particular tyle of writing, in this case, writing supported by examples.

Small Scrawl 1: Henry the dog

Write a small scrawls using Henry the dog, below, as an example of a particular trait in a dog (i.e., loyal, protective, friendly, mischievous, active, lazy.). Give detailed examples of Henry's behavior to convince your reader that Henry exemplifies the trait you have chosen. Use your imagination!

Small Scrawl 2: Facebook Faux Pas

Social networking sites are popular and enjoyable, but people have been fired over posts and photos on social networking sites. Some employers look at social net-working sites before hiring a person and base their decision in part on what they see on an applicant's Facebook page. Write a Small Scrawl supplying several detailed examples of the kinds of things that a job seeker would be wise not to post on his or her Facebook page.

Small Scrawl 3: Follow the Leader

To borrow the plot of an unaccounted number of movies, you have a friend who looks human but just happens to be an alien from a distant galaxy. Your job is to keep him safe and undetected until he is able to return home. You have already ex-plained away his very limited use of English by saying he is from another country. But tonight, he must accompany you to dinner at the home of one of your distant relatives, who is also a top government scientist. It is essential that your friend the alien escape detection. Will ha eat the centerpiece? Use a fine china plate as a Fris-bee? Not if you provide the right example. Write a narrative that starts with your knock at your host's door. Provide specific examples of the things you do to guide your alien friend through this dinner party undected.

For your submission, complete the Small Scrawls 1, 2, and 3 from p. 153-- a paragraph per scrawl [10 sentences minimum]. Each small scrawl is to be a well-developed paragraph of at least 10 WELL-COMPOSED, grammatically sound sentences.

Make sure to have a clear topic sentence, supporting sentences, and a summary sentence for each of your 3 paragraphs. Remember to use transitions. Use unique titles for each paragraph (will help you focus on your thesis/topic sentence).
