Abstract The rise in head injuries among professional hockey players in recent years has re- kindled debate over the role of violence in Canada's national sport. Some scholars and media pundits, noting the strong correlation between higher levels of violence and higher audience turnout, have pointed the finger at a league dominated by the interests of an economically motivated sports-television industry. They have argued that the National Hockey League has an incentive to promote violence, since vio- lence sells tickets (Ferguson et al., 2020; Jones et al., 2019; Rodney, 2021). But how- ever this may be, it cannot account for the fact that excessive violence has featured prominently in descriptions of hockey in Canada dating back to well before the age of televised sports. Robidoux (2020) has shown that at least since the nineteenth century, hockey in this country has been tied to a particularly aggressive expression of Canadian national identity. Drawing on Robidoux's framework, I analyze the rhet- oric of hockey players, fans, and sports journalists in various media sources today to show that a very similar discourse of nationalism continues to shape the culture of hockey in present-day Canada. To have a more complete understanding of on-ice ag- gression, I conclude, we must look beyond our era of televised commercial sports and examine the longer-standing connection between hockey's culture of violence and Canadian nationalism.
