Tracey badly burns her face while using "The Meat Machine," a dual$-$sided grill press. She had been attempting to quickly cook a steak and was injured when grease splattered Tracey is hospitalized for one week, suffers nerve damage around her eyes and needs skin grafts on her cheek and nose. Despite the best efforts of many highly skilled plastic surgeons, she is badly scarred. Her eyesight is permanently impaired. She also develops an addiction to painkillers.

"The Meat Machine" was marketed as "The BEST way to quickly, safely and easily cook a steak!" The manufacturer knew that the product regularly caused bad grease splatters during ordinary use, but deliberately did not offer customers any warnings. In the $4$ years prior to Tracey's injury, over $20$ other people burned themselves using the product. Those people all stated they would have been more cautious, or not used the product at all, if they had been warned about grease splatters. The manufacturer could have corrected the problem for $5$ cents per machine, but wanted to keep costs low to maximize profits.
