Tutorial T11- Baseplate. Plain & Block Shear Capacities
Q1. A factored column design force Fc of 2800 kN is acting at the centroid of a 250 x 250 x 75 SHS. and it is transmitted to the concrete foundation through a 60 mm thick baseplate as shown in the figure below. The base-plate of design strength 255mm2 is anchored to the concrete foundation by four M30 class 4.6 holding down bolts. which are embedded in the concrete foundation. The design concrete strength is taken to be equal to 30Nmm2.
(a) Check the adequacy of the base-plate dimension and thickness using the effective area method.
(b) If an additional factored moment My Ed of 380 klm is applied about the y-y axis. recheck the adequacy of the base-plate dimension and thickness.
(c) Determine whether the nro M30 class 4.6 column base holding down bolts are sufficient to resist the tension force due to the additional moment My Ed of 38 kNm applied about the y-y axis.
