Public relations is useful for a variety of reasons. One part of PR is crisis management. The BP Deepwater Horizon oil spill in 2010 was one of the worst man made environment disasters of all time. An oil rig exploded and caught fire. The oil drills were torn from the seabed and oil spewed out into the Gulf of Mexico for 87 days. A spill cam was set up and we could all watch this in horror. The video below details the incident, the first minute or so shows images of the spill cam. Discuss this disaster or find another one that a company had to deal with. Describe it. What would you do if you were the PR manager? What should companies do so they don't get blindsided by events such as this? How do companies like BP change how the public thinks about them following these events?
