Two rectangular sharp crested weirs are to be constructed on an overflow trapezoidal dam which has an estimated flood discharge of 2600m3s. The dam shall also has 6 sluice gates )=(0.80m wide and 4m high. Assume that sluice gates behave like orifices. The top of the sluice gates is at elevation 50m, the crest of the weir is at elevation 110m and the recorded elevation of the water is at elevation 115m.
a. Compute the designed length of each weir if the dam has to discharge flood at maximum and all the sluice gates are open using Francis Formula neglecting velocity of approach.
b. When the sluice gates are closed and the two weirs are open, find the time in minutes to lower the water surface by 3m if the reservoir upstream has an area of 50 hectares.
