: Some of the graduate job-seekers are "too choosy" even though they lack work experience. Some sectors, like plantations, are actively recruiting but young graduates "stay away" from estate work. The banking industry offers a minimum pay of RM2, 500 to graduates. Fresh engineers in the manufacturing industry get a minimum of RM3, 500. Fresh graduates, within a year of gaining work experience normally hop from one job to another. They don't spend time checking the company's background as they are attracted by a difference in the salary of a few hundred ringgits. Many fresh graduates are rejected because they lack basic verbal and writing skills in the English language and set an unrealistic demand on salary and benefits. At the same time many of these fresh graduates come unprepared for the interview. Normally, successful candidates are those who have two to three years of working experience, possess maturity in problem-solving and decision-making and have good communication skills. The labour market survey states that 12 per cent of fresh graduates job-hop annually. A company may have training and career development plans, but these may not meet the fresh graduates' expectations of earning "big money" immediately. There is lack of flexibility and lack of understanding of young people's lifestyles and needs. There is also lack of flexi-working hours for this group and, as a result, talented graduates leave. Adapted from the New Straits Times, February 13, 2012 a) b) c) d) e) f) Define unemployment. Briefly explain how unemployment rate is calculated. Discuss any three (3) factors which are mentioned in the article that caused unemployment among fresh graduates. (4 marks) (6 marks) As mentioned in paragraph one, identify the type of unemployment faced by the economy. Elaborate any three (3) other types of unemployment. (7 marks) Define fiscal policy. Explain how fiscal policy tools can be used to overcome the problem of unemployment. (5 marks) Explain any three (3) monetary tools that the government could consider in solving the unemployment problem. (6 marks) Give your personal opinion as how fresh graduates should make them more marketable. (2 marks) : Some of the graduate job-seekers are "too choosy" even though they lack work experience.
