Unfortunately I don't know enough about the operational/refining technicality to know how often prototyping would be applicable, but I know that there have been occasions recently when prototypes have been developed. One example would be from our innovations team looking into various ways to reduce emissions throughout our conventional operational area. In collaboration with a small group of production engineers, they developed a prototype for methanol regeneration. Prototyping works very well in my organization (ship building). Our drawings sometimes come up against reality when we go to physically implement things on the ship and that means that we often need to get creative with solutions. We have a team that is dedicated to solving these kinds of problems and the will often prototype solutions with either cardboard wood to see if the suggested solution will fit or not
