Recall that the purpose of this assignment is to participate in a single-subject study that makes use of concepts from CBT and DBT. Because CBT and DBT are both evidence-based theories, both require objective measurements to show the impact of an intervention. Now that you have completed your self-study, you will write a reflection essay in which you report what you did, how you did it, and what you observed because of your activities and measurements. You will also relate your experiences to how this exercise might be used in a group.
- 1. As you write this reflection, assume that you are writing for someone who knows nothing about the project. This means that you must thoroughly explain each step, how you did it, and what you observed.
Information to include in the reflection essay:
- 1. The purpose of your project.
- 1. As you explain what you did, how you did it, and why you did it, be sure to refer to concepts from the class—for example, single-subject design, CBT, DBT, mindfulness, behavior change, etc.
- 2. Define and explain each major concept from the project in brief and be sure to cite your source. For example, as you describe single-subject research, be sure to define it and cite your assigned source. When you explain CBT and DBT, be sure to give brief definitions from your book or other assigned materials, and so on.
- 2. Be sure to describe how and when you measured your moods (the method you used).
- 1. How frequently did you measure your moods/feelings during each phase of your study, and how did you measure your moods/feelings?
- 3. Personal Reflection
- 1. What patterns or trends in your feelings did you observe during the baseline?
- 2. What triggered moods and feelings during the baseline?
- 3. Briefly describe your acts of kindness. What did you do, for whom, where, when, and why?
- 4. Did you observe a difference in moods and feelings after the acts of kindness?
- 5. How many times did you write in your gratitude journal?
- 6. Did you observe any change in your moods after you wrote in the gratitude journal?
- 7. Did you observe any change in your mood when you engaged in your altruistic behavior?
- 8. Was there a difference between the gratitude journal and the kindness journal with respect to impact on your moods?
- 9. Were there noticeable changes from the baseline to the end of the intervention? If yes, what were they? If no, provide a rationale for the lack of change.
- 4. Think about how this exercise could be used in a group.
- 1. Identify what type of group you might use this exercise in (see Chapter 1),
- 2. Identify the group's population,
- 3. Identify the purpose of the exercise for this population,
- 4. Identify the goals of using this exercise within a group.
- 5. How was your experience relevant to the helping profession?
- 6. Be sure to use formal, objective writing for this reflection. You may use the first person, 'I," when you describe what you did.
