Unit 1 Assignment: Creating a PuzzleCompletion requirements

To do: Receive a grade

Follow the assignment instructions and review the rubric:

Overview and Objectives

You will show comprehension of the polar coordinate system, specifically points and equations. You will show how to convert between polar and rectangular coordinates and equations.

What you will submit

You will submit a scrambled 3x3 puzzle, an answer key 3x3 puzzle, and your work for all 12 pairs of problems that you used to create your puzzle.

Instructions

In this assignment, you will use what you have learned in this unit on polar coordinates and complex numbers to create a puzzle. I have included an example of a complex number puzzle below for help in creating your own puzzle. See the original puzzle and then the solution. Please note that the sample puzzle doesn't include any entries related to polar coordinates and polar equations, but in your puzzle, you will need these as well. See below for the parameters of the puzzle you will create:

  • Your puzzle should include 9 squares (a 3 x 3 layout). With this layout, you will end up needing 12 matching pairs for a total of 24 entries as well as 12 additional entries that are just extras to fill in all sides of each square.
  • For your 12 matching pairs, you must include:
    • 2 for polar rectangular coordinates
    • 2 for absolute value of complex numbers
    • 2 for polar rectangular equations
    • 2 for finding powers of imaginary and/or complex numbers
    • 4 for operations with complex numbers (one each of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)
  • You should submit a picture of the original puzzle, a picture of the completed puzzle (solved), and all work for each matching pair showing how each one fits together.Label all your assignment parts and do your best to submit organized work, as this will allow us to provide more accurate feedback.

Hints/Instructions on how to complete this assignment successfully.....

  1. First, create the 12 pairs of problems according to the assignment parameters by completing the work for each of the 12 pairs. You will turn in the work for the 12 pairs as proof that you understand how to go from one form of the pair to its second form of the pair. Please turn in this work and label the work for each of the 12 pairs as to what category it is satisfying.
  2. Second, create the answer key puzzle by putting the 12 pairs in the 12 locations in the center parts of the puzzle. You will need to create other incorrect answers for the outer edge of the puzzle.
  3. Then, cut your answer key puzzle apart and rearrange the puzzle pieces into a scrambled arrangement.
  4. Make sure you turn in the "work for the 12 pairs", "the answer key puzzle", and "the scrambled puzzle" into the assignment.Label all your assignment parts and do your best to submit organized work as this will provide more accurate feedback for you the student.

Remember......For your 12 matching pairs, you must include:

  • 2 for polar rectangular coordinates
  • 2 for absolute value of complex numbers
  • 2 for polar rectangular equations
  • 2 for finding powers of imaginary and/or complex numbers
  • 4 for operations with complex numbers (one each of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division)

Submitting your work:

Click on the "Add Submission" button to upload a text document. PDF is the required file format. (From Word, choose 'save as' from the file menu; select PDF as the file format. From Google Docs., go to the File Menu and select Download as a PDF). We cannot open other file formats, e.g., .pages, .heic, etc., and do NOT accept a Shared Google Doc. Alternatively, you can use the text box on the submission page. You can create tables, add images, etc., using the formatting tools; click the first button on the menu bar to access them.

If you do the work by hand, on paper, you will need to either scan or photograph it. Make sure you save the image in a common file format; PDF is always the preferred file format. However, you can also use JPEG, GIF, or PNG. We recommend you put your file on a shared hard drive like Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, One Drive, etc. Use the online text box to provide us with the URL to the file. Remember to set the permissions on the file to 'anyone with a link'.

Review the 'submitting your assignment' document we provided at the beginning of the course for more details about sharing a document and other valuable tips.

Important: Grading for each assignment takes at least 3 school days and longer at the end of a semester.

Note: We rely on your assignment submissions to demonstrate your understanding of the lessons' concepts. Academic honesty is expected at all times. All work must be original and created by you. All assignments are required. Any incomplete assignment will be returned to you ungraded for you to finish.
