UNIT 2 MAJOR ASSIGNMENT: PROPOSAL Overview: Proposals are a key type of technical writing. They occupy the role of "persuasive paper" in technical writing, in that they attempt to move readers to action. While proposals frequently fall into multiple subcategories, one key distinction is the difference between solicited and unsolicited proposals. Scenario 1: Mega Bean has previously been focused on the "morning customer," with an emphasis on coffees, teas, and healthy breakfast items. However, despite the crowded market in the lunch and dinner takeaway food industry, there has been concern from several franchise owners that not having a wider variety of foods available hurts their afternoon and evening profits. After researching the topic for a modest amount of time (no more than 2-3 hours), submit a proposal along one of the following lines- The menu should stay the same The menu should add a small number of low-overhead, high-interest items to offer some lunch/dinner options The menu should expand dramatically Please make reasonable efforts to consider added overhead costs. Scenario 2: Red Point Rocks currently has three locations-one in a downtown area with active foot traffic, one off of a highway in a suburban area, and the original location in what would best be described as an industrial area. The original location is not currently profitable, largely based on the low number of users it has. However, a number of dedicated and long-term customers rely on the location. After researching the topic for a modest amount of time (no more than 2-3 hours), submit a proposal along one of the following lines- Closing the gym Decreasing gym costs Increasing gym revenue through alternative means Assignment: To the best of your ability, complete a proposal in keeping with the guidelines available through course materials and online research. Aim for a document no longer than 1000-1200 words, without need for detailed financial analyses (this is not an accounting class-ballpark numbers are completely okay). Key Notes: This project does not need a cover letter or abstract currently. The project requires students engage in at least some outside research. A resource example is available by request after the student has selected a topic and has begun creating at least a few questions for inquiry. Grading: One aspect of targeted grading will focus on the ability to be clear, concise, and objective. The other aspect of the targeted grade will be based on how well the student advances a main or central argument.
