Unit of work task 2: Learning activities
You have been appointed to a NSW high school that currently offers three NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA) courses for Year 11 mathematics: Mathematics Standard, Mathematics Advanced and Mathematics Extension. You have been assigned to teach a class enrolled in one of these courses.
Assessment tasks 1, 2 and 3 collectively plan and evaluate a unit of work your allocated class. Task 1 is a group collaborative activity that develops the assessment task and the detailed outline of the unit of work. Task 2 is an individual task in which each group member creates and shares at least one detailed learning plan from within the unit of work. Task 3 is an individual task in which each group member reflects on and evaluates the entire unit of work.
Requirements for task 2
This is an individual task. Each member of the group formed in Task 1 is required to plan one detailed learning plan that addresses one or more of the learning intentions outlined in the unit progression developed in Task 1. The learning plan should take approximately two hours, so will span more than one lesson. Group members are encouraged to provide peer feedback to improve each section.
The learning activity or activities must:
- employ appropriate and evidence-based teaching and learning practices that may include explicit teaching, mathematical modelling, and/or inquiry;
- use teaching strategies that provide achievable challenges for students of varying capabilities and characteristics, and allow for the participation and successful learning of all class members (encouraging persistence and challenge, by enabling and extending prompts);
- provideachallengingandsafelearningenvironment,withanemphasisonmasteryandeffort;
- employ high quality resources, including the use of mathematically able information and communication technologies;
- clearly show formative assessment opportunities together with prompts to promote learning; and
- address appropriate cross-curriculum perspectives as appropriate.
