Use the Haddon Matrix Worksheet to work through a scenario of your choice. Follow the steps below, complete the Haddon Matrix Worksheet and identify possible interventions.

How to use the Haddon Matrix:

1. Choose a scenario include the person(s) who might be affected, the context (in-home, at work, urban, rural, etc.), and the injury issue.
2. Identify the host (the injured person) and the agent (what directly causes the injury). For a scenario with multiple potential hosts, fill out multiple matrices.

An example might be a car-cyclist collision where both the driver and the cyclist might be injured. A person driving a car and a person riding a bike are affected by different factors. This is different from a car-car collision, where both drivers would be potentially affected by the same factors.

3. Fill in the boxes of the Haddon Matrix with all possible factors (risk and protective) that could be involved in an injury-causing incident. Include all ideas at this point. Be sure to think broadly (Hint: consider the three Es education, engineering and enforcement).
4. Once you are done brainstorming, look at the factors you listed and consider the questions given below. By answering these questions, you identify which factors can be changed and which changes would have the greatest impact. Knowing this information helps you to start identifying possible interventions.
5. Which of these factors are most amenable to change?
6. Will changing any of these factors make a difference? If so, which ones?
7. Complete a list of at least five interventions including a short write up of your rationale and projected outcomes of the interventions.
