Elsa has just been hired to head a team handling a new project to develop an unconventional software package for the airline industry. Elsa was hired because of her expertise in the software industry. This is a challenging opportunity for the company to break into the airline market. In an effort to show the group her leadership skills Elsa decided to become very friendly with them. She joked around whenever she had a chance and always asked them to join her for lunch. She let them know that if they needed to talk she would always be available. She also spent most of her time reading articles about the airline industry. Initially she had worked well with the team. The members were highly skilled and very supportive. Recently, however, Elsa was shocked when she overheard some of them saying that they were thinking of quitting the team and describing the decision to hire her as a big mistake.

1. Using Fiedler's Contingency Theory, explain the leadership style which should be used in this situation. Tell the leadership style, give an answer for each of the situational factors and use information from the case to support your choices.

2. Using House's Path-Goal Theory explain the leadership style you should use. Tell the leadership style and support your answer by explaining which situational factors are relevant and supporting your answer with information from the case.

3. See the case below. Use your decision tree, explain each choice you make by referring to the case. Decide on the amount of participation you will use in solving this problem. Be sure to explain why this is a group or individual situation and if there are multiple answers, what you chose and why.

You are general manager in charge of a large gang laying an oil pipeline. You need to estimate your rate of progress to schedule material deliveries to your next site.

You know the terrain you will be travelling and have the historical data needed to calculate the speed and variance over the terrain. So it will be easy for you to calculate the earliest and latest time that supplies will be needed at the next site. It is important that your estimate be reasonably accurate. Underestimates will result in supervisors and workers being idle. An overestimate will tie up materials for a time before they are to be used.

Progress has been good and your 5 supervisors and other employees will receive a substantial bonus if the project is completed ahead of time.
