Using a one-hole punch (or a plastic straw), cut 20 leaf discs from young actively growing leaves. Fresh baby spinach leaves work well. Avoid major leaf veins. Prepare a 0.2% solution of sodium bicarbonate and water in a measuring cup, by adding 1/8 teaspoon of baking soda (sodium bicarbonate) to 1 cup of water (or 300 ml of water). Mix to dissolve the baking soda. With your pipette, add one drop of liquid dish soap to the 0.2% sodium bicarbonate solution that you made in step 2. It is critical to avoid suds. Stir gently to mix. Remove the plunger from the syringe and place the leaf discs into the barrel. Replace the plunger into the barrel and slowly push the air out leaving only a small amount air in the syringe. Be careful not to crush the leaf discs! Pull a small volume of sodium bicarbonate/soap solution from the measuring cup into your syringe. You may want to pull about 5 cc or 5 ml. Tap the syringe to suspend the leaf discs in the solution. Make sure that when the tip of the syringe is pointing upward (and the plunger handle is pointing down), the discs are
