Consider a separation process in which a stream of water, ethanol, and methanol enters a process unit. Two streams leave the unit, each with varying amounts of the three components (see figure below).
mflowrate-tops =?
xH2O = 0.20
xEthanol = 0.35
mflowrate-in = 100 xMethanol = 0.45
xH2O = 0.50
xEthanol = x
xMethanol = 1 - 0.5 x
mflowrate-bottoms =?
xH2O = 0.65
xEthanol = 0.25
xMethanol = 0.10
Determine the mass flow rates into the system and out of the top and bottom of the separation unit.
a)First, set up the material-balance equations for each of the three components:
Water
0.5 mflowrate-in = 0.2mflowrate-tops + 0.65mflowrate-bottoms
0.5(100) = 0.2mflowrate-tops + 0.65mflowrate-bottoms
50 = 0.2mflowrate-tops + 0.65mflowrate-bottoms
Ethanol
100x = 0.35mflowrate-tops + 0.25mflowrate-bottoms
0 = -100x + 0.35mflowrate-tops + 0.25mflowrate-bottoms
Methanol
100(1-0.5-x) = 0.45mflowrate-tops + 0.1mflowrate-bottoms
50 = 100x + 0.45mflowrate-tops + 0.1mflowrate-bottoms
b)Arrange the equations you found in part (a) into a matrix representation:
0 0.2 0.65 50
A = -100 0.35 0.25 B = 0
100 0.45 0.1 50
c)Use Matlabs Matrix Algebra (see Chapter 10) to solve the linear system of three equations.
Use Matlabs symbolic capabilities to solve the same problem (see Chapter 12) (12.19)
d)Create the symbolic equations to represent each material balance.
e)Use the solve function to solve the system of three equations and three unknowns.
